Learning Outcomes
- Acquire knowledge about the technical properties of electric and magnetic circuits using the fundamental calculation methods ;
- Design single phase and three phase electrical installations using the power method (Boucherot method) ;
- Understand star and delta connections in a three phase system ;
- Design an industrial installation and develop its power circuit including the transformer ;
- Develop a circuit model for single phase transformers using Kapp's model ;
- Acquire knowledge about the electrical and the magnetic phenomena and their order of magnitude ;
- Understand how to implement the phenomena and their basic applications ;
- Understand the main characteristics of basic components in electrical circuits ;
- Understand the main characteristics of transformers ;
- Develop skills of electrical design and operation of a three phase electrical system.
Content
- Basic electrical circuits, current and power calculation methods ;
- Basic magnetic circuits, fundamental parameters, calculation methods including the influence of air gaps, losses, different technologies ;
- Different electrical components, conductors, resistances, capacitors, coils, magnetic materials, dielectric materials, characteristics and applications.
- Single phase electrical system, characteristics and operating principle, power calculation method (Boucherot method), reactive power compensation, electrical lines and cables ;
- Three phase electrical system, characteristics and operating principle, order of magnitude of frequencies, voltages and powers ;
- Three phase loads, coupling methods, star connection, delta connection, parameters calculations such as voltage, current and power ;
- Unbalanced three phase loads, neutral current calculation and the voltage between the common point and the neutral ;
- Measurement of active and reactive power in a three phase system ;
- Introduction to transformers and Kapp's model.
Pre-requisites / co-requisites
Theoretical concepts in Physics related to electricity that are covered in years 1 and 2 at ECAM.
