General objectives
1 - Demonstrate an understanding of the fundamentals of stress/starin analysis and be abble to apply them to the calculation of loads and deformations in simple structures
2 - Recognise the relationships between commonly used material properties, and recall their value for typical materials used in mechanical engineering structures
3 - Critically evaluate and judge the validity of a method of analysis in a solid mechanics problem in terms of its assumptions and simplifications
4 - Apply concepts for fail-safe design"
Content
elastic behaviour: stress, strain and their relation for an homogeneous isotropic material, Young's modulus of elasticity, shear modulus and Poisson's ratio
Properties of sections (A and I), axial, torsional and bending loads.
