General objectives
This module covers advanced electronic system design techniques. This includes Computer Aided Design using VHDL entry and advanced digital simulation using Xlinx. Design techniques include synchronous as well as asynchronous circuits. High level synthesis is covered as a top down design approach including data flow graphs. Designing digital system using modulo-2 arithmetic including linear filters are covered as well. VHDL is covered in detail including combinatorial and sequential system design.

Learning Outcomes:
1. DEMONSTRATE SYSTEMATIC UNDERSTANDING OF VARIOUS STATE-OF-THE-ART DESIGN METHODOLOGIES AND DIGITAL DESIGN TECHNOLOGIES.
2. DESIGN COMPLEX DIGITAL SYSTEMS INDEPENDENTLY USING A VARIETY OF NEW TECHNIQUES.
3. FIND SOLUTIONS FOR A WIDE RANGE OF DIGITAL APPLICATIONS, SELECTING AND CRITICALLY EVALUATING SUITABLE IMPLEMENTATION METHODOLOGIES.
4. IMPLEMENT USING SOFTWARE / HARDWARE TOOLS AND INTERPRET SIMULATION RESULTS.
Content
CAD Modelling: Review of solid modelling techniques (feature creation,
parametric design, assembly, mechanisms). Surface modelling techniques
(shape creation, dynamic modification). Automation of CAD (HTML, Interface
design, Java-Script programming, CAD Interfacing).
Mathematics of Curves and Surfaces: Matrix mathematics. Geometric
Transformations. Derivation of Polynomial, Bezier, B-Spline curves and surfaces. Discussion of programming implementation issues.
Reverse Engineering: CMM Operation (Linear dimensions, Diametric
Dimensions, Angular Dimensions, generation of defining curves for CAD
modelling). Laser Scanner Operation (Data Healing Techniques, Integration
with CAD/RP).
Rapid Prototyping: Data Transfer, STL file format, RP Systems, RP Tooling,
RP Applications (ceramic, product, medical etc), Tooling from RP.
