General objectives
This Design Laboratory is multidisciplinary - meaning it includes contributions from various integrated disciplines - in order to teach the problems linked to developing new designed complex products starting from the internal components and their connections.
The laboratory leads to a single exam. It lasts for six months.

Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the course, the students will have:
- Ability to start up and develop, with a solid systemic methodology, a design survey to configure a complex product starting with the prioritised definition of its basic components;
- Ability to consider each existing mass-produced article as an interrelated and complex system of components;
- Ability to manage a project survey to configure a complex product;
- Ability to disassemble, really or virtually, a complex product and then define its basic chart of function;
- Ability to outline the flows of energy, matter and information that flow from one component to another;
- Ability to reconfigure:
-> The product starting from the knowledge of the territory in which it will be used so that the instrument he valorize the material culture and is integrated in the enhancement of the system of micro/small business;
-> The relational system components coming to its final definition taking into account the maintenance work, the interchangeability of parts, disposal at end of life and the relationship with the context of use and the environment.
- Ability to define goals, contents and phases of the design of the components system;
- Ability to reconfigure the relational system of the components and reach its final definition bearing in mind the maintenance interventions, parts replacement, disposal at the end of its life and its relationship with the context of use and environment;
- Ability to elaborate new economic-productive-distributive models;
- Ability to communicate, clearly and effectively, and to discuss the elaborated proposals and display a familiarity with different communication techniques (written, oral, graphic).
Content
The laboratory's activity follows a theme: the configuration of an industrial product starting with the analysis of the components that make it up and considering the culture of the subject that will use it and the territorial, cultural and social ambit in which the product will be used. The activity is developed by groups of students (around three per group).
Starting with the disassembly of a complex product - supplied by a company that will collaborate for the entire module supplying technical investigations - we will identify its components, how they are connected, the flows of matter and energy that link them. Each group will be asked to analyse the above individually and to discuss it with the others so as to share a common critical vision of the subject. As the project progresses, presentations will be held on the individual works with experts from the collaborating company and open discussions on the results between the various parties.

The laboratory is interdisciplinary. The disciplinary contributions include:

Pre-requisites
Established knowledge in design, production technologies, manual and computer representation techniques for the development of an industrial product.
