Objectifs Généraux
- Be able to develop material specifications for a given application
- Be able to use the tools to choose a material, the processes and any associated treatments for a given application
- Be able to define the treatments on metallic materials (heat treatments, surface treatments) to adapt materials properties to applications and to interact with the heat treatment workshop
- Be able to use composite materials wisely, taking into account their main properties
- Be able to take into account the materials durability (effects of environment and time) during design
- Be able to integrate the end of life of parts and the life cycle into a design process
Contenu
The course is based on the analysis of concrete applications to provide the necessary concepts for the understanding, definition and use of technical, functional, economic and / or environmental criteria for the choice of materials and processes

Course content :

- Materials (and processes) choice : main principles and methodology
- Metallic materials for highly stressed mechanical parts, adaptation of mechanical properties by heat treatment processes, influence of parts size
- Light structural parts: use of low density metallic materials, engineering polymers or composite materials
- Materials for very high temperature parts
- Durability of materials (corrosion, polymers aging)
- Parts end of life (recycling, ...)

Practice
The practical work will highlight and observe the effects of corrosion and aging on metals and polymers. The choice of materials will be implemented through case studies through the use of a software for materials choice



Prérequis
Program of the course Materials for the engineer (Semester 5): Knowledge of the different classes of materials, the main thermal and mechanical properties

1 Prediction, interpretation and prevention of the influence of the environment and time on the materials behaviour 2 Written exam of 2h, whith form sheet (calculator allowed) on the durability of materials
2 Ability to apply the material choice method for applications in accordance with a design objective (mass reduction, cost, environmental impact)
Ability to apply the choice of materials method for metal parts with high mechanical stress: choice of materials and processes (heat treatments)
Ability to take into account the specific properties of composites
Ability to choose a material for a high temperature application
Ability to take into account the life cycle of parts
4 Written exam of 3h, whith form sheet (calculator allowed) on materials choice, associated whith heat treatments if necessary, according to design objectives and the part's life cycle
3 Ability to perform and interpret experiments and analyzes on the durability of materials
Ability to conduct a concrete case study involving choice of materials and processes (use of material selection software)
2 Practice evaluation includes a MCQ score produced at the end of practical laboratory work on the durability of materials, and a score attributed to a report on a concrete case study in materials choice.
