This module covers the fundamentals of computer networks, including the historical context and various use cases. It also explores the client/server model of communication, network components, and infrastructure. The module introduces the TCP/IP/Ethernet communication protocols, along with the more generalist TCP/IP and OSI models for communication.

Addressing schemes at the layer 2 (MAC Address) and layer 3 (IP Address) are also discussed, as well as frames and packet processing and the role of end devices and intermediary devices (switch/routers) in network communication. The module explores communication on local and remote networks, including an in-depth discussion of the Address Resolution Protocol (ARP). Private and Public networks are differentiated and the role of adress translation (NAT, with or without PAT) clarified.

Practical knowledge of configuration of an IP/Ethernet network interface, network, and router are aquired and frame analysis is practiced.

Security of information systems is a critical aspect, and this module provides an understanding of internal and external threats to information systems. It also introduces cryptographic schemes to encrypt and decrypt data, as well as the Information Systems Security Policy (ISSP).

Lastly, the module delves into the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which is a regulation in EU law on data protection and privacy for all individuals within the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA).
