Introduction to the concepts and methods which make it possible to avoid or control the conditions of development of breaks in industrial components. Means used to examine the ruptures and know how to interpret the facies in order to understand the mechanisms that led to the rupture in order to be able to provide solutions. Analytical and numerical methods of calculating part life. Targeted skills : Understanding sudden rupture and fatigue failure mechanisms Designing a structural part with the choice of the appropriate material, better dimensioning taking into account shape or internal defects, dynamic stresses, design optimization: Optimizing in-service performance Safety of use Prevent the risk of sudden failure Determine the service life - Interpret facies of rupture or understand the interpretations of specialists - Use digital simulation for fatigue sizing. Failure under static stresses The brittle and ductile fracture mechanisms are studied for the different families of materials as well as the various influencing parameters. The brittle ductile transition, the toughness, as well as the fracture statistics, complete this part to refine the choices of materials and their dimensioning for the strenght to sudden fracture by crack propagation. Failure under dynamic stresses The mechanisms of fatigue failure in materials, and the bases of pre-dimensioning of parts for dynamic stresses are studied. The course is illustrated with numerous examples and exercises from expertises treated in the laboratory. Practical work In the form of mini projects allowing for a global consideration of the design, choice of materials, analytical and numerical calculations and expertise of parts subjected to dynamic or statics constraints. |

N° | Nature | Coefficient | Observable objectives |
1 | Written assignment lasting 2 hours covering all the concepts covered and their applications to concrete cases. | 1 | Show that the different modes of rupture are known. Check that the different quantities characterizing the mechanical properties are understood and can be used for the sizing of simple parts.. |
2 | Expertise of parts broken in service, presentation of the approach and results to the group. | 1 | Demonstrate by carrying out a mini project that the theoretical elements seen in class can be used in the resolution of practical cases of fractures and sizing of parts |
