Learning Outcomes
The study of approaches used in design offices/R&D, the application of the tools covered in years 3 and 4 on concrete projects (methods, CAD-PLM, finite elements, etc)
Content
Course : The course comprises several independent parts:
- Car-suspensions & axles
- Suspensions:
Roles - Calculation of the vehicle's Eigen frequencies using plane models - Balance between the front and back suspensions - Choice of stiffness.
- Review of static load strength calculations:
Isostatic and hyperstatic systems - Choice of types of connectors – Consideration of clearances and connectors stiffness.
- Materials Strength concepts reviewed:
Stress calculations – Concept of yield strength - Optimal sizing corresponding to the choice of material - Mass reduction.
- Finite Element Method reviewed
- Screw-assemblies:
Quality class of bolts - Fatigue resistance - Rigidity of on assembly - Minimum starting load coefficient - Best practices
- Failure analysis: Case study - Analysis of failures of suspension components.Project : Students are divided into four groups and are responsible for the sizing and design of a vehicle axle in accordance with the established specifications (external dimensions, kinematics, loads applied, maximum weight, etc.).
